Editorial policy

How we decide what goes on here.

Short version: we do not sell inclusion, we check what we publish, and we keep advertising apart from the directory itself. The longer version is below.

What gets listed

Any business, service or venue genuinely trading in and around Hartbeespoort. That includes people working from a spare room, people who trade at a market once a month, and people based just outside the dam who do most of their work here.

We ask for enough to know a real person is behind it: a working phone number or email address, and a name we can find somewhere other than the form.

What does not

  • Anything we cannot verify at all
  • Businesses that have closed or moved away
  • Listings submitted by someone with no connection to the business, unless they are happy for us to hand it over
  • Anything unlawful, and anything that exists to mislead people

How listings work

Every listing is free, and it stays free. Nobody can pay to be listed and nobody can pay for a better listing. We do not hold a phone number back in order to charge for it, and we never will.

Many listings start with us. We build the page from what the business publishes itself, on its own website and social pages, and mark it as unclaimed until the owner has checked it. When an owner claims their listing and tells us it is right, they can add photos, services, a menu and more.

Why some businesses appear first

Nobody pays to appear first. The businesses at the top of a category and on the home page are the ones whose owners have claimed their listing and checked it is right. Any business can get there by claiming its listing, and claiming is free.

Appearing first buys no editorial recommendation and no protection from a correction. If a listing is wrong, we fix it like any other.

Advertising is kept apart

Advertising is sold as banners and sponsor slots, kept apart from the directory itself. A banner looks like a banner. A sponsored card that sits among our own picks says Sponsored. Nothing paid for is dressed up as our recommendation, and no advertiser can buy a place in the directory or in its search.

Corrections and removals

Tell us what is wrong and we will fix it. If you want your listing gone, say so and it goes. No forms, no notice period, no reason needed. Contact us here.

Two lines only you can write

Both are judgement calls about how you want to run this, and both belong on this page once you have decided.

  • Whether you will list a business with a complaint history, and what you do if one arrives
  • Whether a business can pay to be removed from a comparison with a competitor, which is the kind of request that eventually turns up
