our story

From a garage to a store in Harties

We bake gourmet stuffed cookies, and our first store is here in Hartbeespoort.

The store is grab and go for now, with no seating. Pop in for a freshly baked cookie to take with you, along with a good coffee, a creamy milkshake, a freezo or an ice cream, and try the Bets Bakkie, a warm cookie topped with ice cream, sauce and all the good stuff.

Online the menu runs in two parts. Our six OG flavours are always available, and on the first Monday of every month at 10am we drop six brand new limited edition cookies, baked just for that month. Once they are sold out they are gone, with no restocks and no extras.

Ouma Bets Gebak started in a garage in 2024 with no startup capital, no investors and one R800 mixer from Takealot. My name is Shineal Labuschagne, and I turned to baking when the practical side of my Animal Health Technician studies made it impossible to keep working full time. I could not afford to build the business quickly, so I built it slowly, one cookie and one customer at a time.

It is named for my grandmother, Bets Barnard. She worked incredibly hard and carried her family as its breadwinner all her life, and naming the bakery after her was my way of honouring the example she set. Those are the same values it is built on.

Today Ouma Bets is a brand loved by customers across South Africa, with our first walk in store here in Hartbeespoort, and we are in a phase of intentional growth: expanding our footprint while keeping the business rooted in quality, consistency and community. No matter how much we grow, we will never forget the garage, the R800 mixer or the customers who chose to believe in us.

Coffee, milkshakes, freezos and ice cream alongside the cookies, and the Bets Bakkie, all to take away. There is no seating in the store at the moment.

Collect or have it couriered

Order online and pick a collection date and time, or send it door to door. Allow three to five business days once it is with the couriers.

Common questions

What products do you sell?

We sell freshly baked, limited edition gourmet cookies that change monthly. Some flavours may return, others will not, and that is part of the fun.

Are my cookies freshly baked?

Yes. All our cookies are baked fresh before your order is ready for shipping or collection, to make sure you get the best quality.

How can I enjoy the cookies?

Enjoy as is, perfect straight out the box if you do not feel like waiting. Warm it up by taking the cookie out of the bag and microwaving it for 10 to 15 seconds for a soft, gooey centre. Bake it fresh by putting the cookie, out of the bag, in the oven or air fryer for 2 to 4 minutes.

How long do the cookies stay fresh?

Up to 2 to 3 weeks when stored correctly. The best before date is on the back of the package.

How do I store the cookies?

Store your cookies in a cool, dry place away from direct heat. If it is very hot, you can pop them in the fridge to keep them fresh for longer. Once opened, we recommend enjoying them within 2 days for best quality. For long term storage, cookies can be frozen for up to 6 months. When you are ready to enjoy them, bake straight from frozen at 180C until warm and gooey again. Do not microwave from frozen.

Do you ship nationwide?

Yes, we ship nationwide within South Africa.

How long does delivery take?

Delivery typically takes 1 to 3 business days, depending on your area. This does not include courier delays out of our control. At checkout you can select your preferred delivery date and we always plan and dispatch your order in advance to arrive as close as possible to it, but we use an external courier, so your order may arrive before, on, or after that date. We recommend choosing a date with a buffer, especially for important occasions.

Do you offer custom or bulk orders?

Yes. For special events or bulk orders, please contact us directly.

Are your products halal, vegetarian or allergen friendly?

Our products are made in a kitchen that is not allergen free and may contain or come into contact with nuts, dairy, gluten, eggs, soy and other allergens. At this time we are not Halaal certified, although it is something we are actively looking into for the future. We also do not currently offer vegan or vegetarian specific options. If you have any allergies, dietary restrictions or concerns, we strongly recommend reaching out to us before placing an order so we can advise you.
